In today’s digital world, it seems as though we can’t escape technology.
Screens are everywhere---from our desks to our wrists. At Mahoning Valley Direct Primary Care, I often see firsthand the negative effects of prolonged screen use. But know that even small changes in your daily screen time habits can lead to big health improvements.
Here are some of the health benefits I see when my patients engage in digital detox:
1. Better Sleep Quality

One of the most immediate benefits of reducing screen time—especially in the evening—is improved sleep. The blue light emitted from phones, tablets, and computers interferes with melatonin production, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep.
Try to avoid using your phone or tablet one to two hours before bedtime. It can help you fall asleep faster and enjoy a deeper and healthier sleep.
Frequently in my practice I have been able to reduce or eliminate medications or supplements that patients take to help them sleep by simply educating them on limiting their screen use.
2. Reduced Eye Strain
Digital eye strain (or computer vision syndrome) can happen when you spend hours in front of screens. Common symptoms include dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches.
To help prevent this from happening, take a regular break from screen viewing using the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds).
3. Improved Mental Health

High amounts of screen time—especially on social media—has been associated with increased anxiety, depression, and feelings of loneliness. Try focusing more on face-to-face interactions with people and pursuing offline hobbies and activities. This can boost mood, lower stress, and enhance overall mental health.
4. Enhanced Physical Health
Long hours of screen use = prolonged sitting. When you are inactive, numerous health issues including obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes become more likely. Try to engage in more movement throughout the day, which supports healthier weight, better circulation, and stronger muscles and joints.
5. Better Focus and Productivity

Constant notifications and multitasking on screens lead to distractions and reduce productivity. Become more focused by limiting screen use during work or studying. You will likely find that you can complete tasks more efficiently and feel less mentally fatigued.
Simple Steps to Get Started
Avoid using your phone in places in the bedroom and when eating.
Schedule regular tech breaks during the day.
Use apps or settings that track and limit screen usage.
Replace screen time with outdoor activities or hobbies.
